Fårö (Swedish pronunciation:[ˈfôːrøː]) or Fåre in Gutnish[5][6] is a Baltic Sea island just north of the island of Gotland, itself off mainland Sweden's southeastern coast. It is the second-largest island in the county and it is a popular summer resort. It has its own language, Faroymal, a dialect of Gutnish.

Fårö is also the name of the populated area (socken) consisting of both Fårö and Gotska Sandön islands.[7] It comprises the same area as the administrative Fårö District, established on 1&#;January [8]

Geography

The island is separated from Gotland by the narrow Fårö-strait, and connected by two car ferries, operated by the Swedish Transport Administration. It has a total area of square kilometres ( square miles), of which square kilometres ( square miles) are water areas or islets.

On the islands of Fårö and Gotland are rock formations called rauk. They are a result of erosion during the Ice age and are unique to Gotland and Fårö.

Fårö är enstaka ö riktning om Gotland, skild ifrån Gotlands "fastland" av Fårösund. Fårö existerar Sveriges åttonde största ö.[1] Fårö utgör en personlig socken, Fårö socken, samt församling, Fårö församling. Fårö är &#;km² stor[2] samt har en invånarantal vid (31 december )[3]. Från centralortenVisby är detta 56&#;km mot Fårösund. Fårösundsleden från Gotland och Fårösund till Fårö trafikeras tillsammans med bilfärja, såsom inte existerar avgiftsbelagd. detta finns vissa planer vid att ersätta färjan tillsammans med en bro, Fårösundsbron.[4] Fåröfärjan från Fårösund till Broa på Fårö tar sju–åtta minuter.

Etymologi

Öns namn, som skrevs Faroyna[5] samt som Farøø[6] under talet, består troligen av orden far, likt i farväg eller farvatten, och ö. Namnet äger troligtvis ingenting att utföra med djuret får (lamb på gutamål), men detta kan ändå inte uteslutas att detta samnordiska termen får äger funnits inom forngutniska.[6]

Fårö är ett flack moränö och upptas främst från gles tallskog med flera myrar samt träsk. detta består även till massiv del från karga hedmarker med mindre odlingsbygder. vid ön finns ett säreget flygsandsområde, Ullah

    Additional information

    Please note that the priority lane for the ferry, valid between June 1 and August 15, is for permanent residents on Fårö, certain residents on Gotland as well as transport and emergency vehicles. The priority lane is during low season for buses, taxis and emergency vehicles only.
