Veg janssons frestelse
METHOD:
Preheat your oven to degrees celsius.
Using a tbsp or so of your vegan butter or margarine coat an oven dish suitable for a gratin.
Prepare your creamy mixture by combining oat cuisine (cooking cream alternative) with the corn starch, vinegar. spices, sugar and salt in a bowl. Whisk generously until well combined and set aside.
Cut your peeled potatoes into somewhat chunky matchsticks, see video for reference. Then place a third of your chopped potatoes at the bottom of the dish. Following that spread half of your onion and half of your capers evenly over the potato layer. Now repeat this layering process once more and then finish with a final layer of potatoes.
Pour your oat cuisine creamy mixture evenly over the potato and dont worry if it doesnt cover them, it will bubble up and cook evenly still.
Finish off by sprinkling your breadcrumbs and a little bit of salt as well as spreading some chunks of your remaining vegan butter or margarine over the top.
Place at the center of the oven and cook for 60 minutes. If you find that the top of your gratin browns too heavily place a baking sheet over the top of it as you finish the cooking process to protect it

And in case you m Jansson's Temptation is apparently hugely popular in Sweden, but I can say that this unassuming casserole of shredded potatoes, onions, ansjovis, and cream was not a favorite at our Swedish Christmas Dinner. I'll have to look for a few other recipes to see if I did anything wrong, but I am including it here now because of its reputation, and because I did serve it at that otherwise fine dinner. The recipe calls for ansjovis, which are a sort of spiced and brined anchovy, but with a completely different flavor. I saw them at the Simply Scandinavian Swedish market in Portland, but I didn't buy them at the time, assuming incorrectly that they were just regular anchovies from a Swedish maker. If I try this again, I'll be sure to get proper ansjovis. Janssons Frestelse
